Speaking Up: The Boldest Act of Self-Leadership

I still remember the exact moment.

The doctor’s voice was calm, but the words shattered my world.

I had been feeling off for a while, but like many high-achieving professionals, I kept pushing forward. There was always another deadline, another client to serve, another opportunity to say yes to.

Then, the diagnosis came: a tumor in my thyroid.

Suddenly, everything stopped.

The projects that once felt urgent? No longer my priority.

The work that once defined me? No longer the most important thing.

The path I had been on? No longer the right one.

As I faced surgery and the uncertainty of what came next, I asked myself three hard questions:

If I couldn’t work, who was I?

Had I spent years building a career that wasn’t truly aligned with my purpose?

And if I had one chance to start over, what would I choose?

The Wake-Up Call That Changed Everything

For as long as I could remember, I had been drawn to the power of self-expression—to the way people transform when they find their voice, the way confidence radiates when they speak their truth.

That was my gift. That was my calling.

And yet—I had spent too long ignoring it.

So, I made the scariest decision of my life: I walked away from a highly paid client to finally do what I was meant to do. I stripped away everything that wasn’t me. I stopped shrinking.

And that’s when Speak to Shine was born.

Why Speaking Up Feels So Hard (Yet So Necessary)

For so many women—whether in leadership, entrepreneurship, or expert roles—visibility is no longer a choice.

If we want to lead, if we want to inspire, if we want to make an impact, we have to be seen and heard.

And yet, speaking up remains one of the hardest things to do.

Why?

Because from a young age, we are subtly (and sometimes blatantly) conditioned to believe that:

🚫 Speaking too much is bossy

🚫 Owning our expertise is arrogant

🚫 Taking up space is too much

So we learn to hold back. We wait until we are sure we’re right. We soften our words, qualify our statements, and diminish our own authority. We become so good at staying small that it feels unnatural to take up space.

But the truth is, if we don’t own our voice, someone else will shape our narrative for us.

Speaking Up Is a Leadership Skill—And It Can Be Learned

One of the most profound shifts I’ve witnessed in my coaching is this: the moment a woman realizes she has permission to own her voice, everything changes.

✅ She starts sharing her ideas without overanalyzing

.✅ She learns to stand in the discomfort of visibility rather than shrink away

.✅ She speaks with conviction, even in rooms where she is the only woman.

The ability to speak up, stand out, and shine isn’t reserved for the lucky few—it is built through intention, practice, and self-trust.

The 3 Pillars of Speaking Up with Confidence

  1. Authenticity Over PerfectionYou don’t need to be the most polished speaker in the room. You need to be real. The more you try to sound “right,” the more you lose the power of your own voice. People connect to authenticity, not performance.

  2. Mastering PresenceConfidence isn’t just about what you say—it’s about how you show up. Your voice, posture, and eye contact tell a story before you even begin speaking. Learning to command presence is one of the fastest ways to shift from self-doubt to self-leadership.

  3. The Power of Reframing FearFear doesn’t disappear—it transforms. Instead of seeing nervousness as a sign that you’re unprepared, reframe it: nervousness means you care. It’s your body preparing you for impact. Lean into it.

The Bigger Issue: Women and Visibility

The more I worked with women, the more I realized this wasn’t just my struggle—it’s a global issue.

Studies show that women are interrupted 2.5 times more often than men in meetings. A staggering 75% of women experience speech anxiety. Many women report holding back their opinions at work out of fear of being judged.

This isn’t just about speaking—it’s about visibility, leadership, and impact.

Your Voice Is Your Power—Use It

The most powerful leaders, entrepreneurs, and experts aren’t those who have never felt fear.

They’re the ones who learned to speak up anyway.

With the right treatment and surgery, my health got better, and I’m well now. But in my career, I had to dig deep and rebuild—not just my health, but my entire professional identity.

I had to come face-to-face with my authentic self and gather the courage to share my ideas, my voice, and my message with the world.

💡 That’s why I created Speak to Shine—the exact process I used to step into my power as a speaker, leader, and entrepreneur.

Because the truth is: Your voice is your greatest asset. Your ability to communicate shapes your career, leadership, and impact. And the world needs you to speak up.

If you’ve been playing small, holding back, or doubting your voice, I see you. I was you.

And I can tell you this—it’s time to stop waiting for permission.
